Lessons that Last: The Teachers Students Remember

Teleconference featuring David Shribman, Executive Editor, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A celebration of the teaching profession, this teleconference program will go beyond the "techniques" of teaching to the heart, soul, and art of the teacher. It features Pulitzer Prize winner and Washington Week in Review panelist David Shribman discussing what he learned during the writing of his latest book, I Remember My Teacher, a collection of reminiscences from people across the country about America's greatest teachers.

Teaching Students to Analyze Levels of Evidence: One Department's Integrated Approach

  • Room 4060 Forbes Tower **, Thursday, April 8, 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.

Presenter: Margo Holm, Department of Occupational Therapy, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences

The Department of Occupational Therapy requires students to apply a five-step hierarchy of levels of evidence (Moore et al, 1995) to become critical evaluators of research literature, and as a means to guide future clinical practice and to generate critical research questions. Dr. Holm will describe how these principles are integrated across a departmental curriculum and present sample assignments.

Bring your lunch to this “brown-bag” session. Hot and cold drinks and cookies will be served.

**Forbes Tower is located at the corner of Atwood and Sennott Streets (across the street from Dave and Andy’s Ice Cream). Enter the building on Atwood Street, directly across from the Rite Aid Drug Store. (Do not use the Meyran Avenue entrance.) Learning Outside the Classroom

Communication, Community and Assessment

The following two workshops are intended to provide ideas and resources for instructors engaged in teaching methodologies such as service-learning, experiential learning and distance education that extend academic work beyond the traditional classroom setting. Sponsored by the Amizade Center* and the Center for Instructional Development & Distance Education, these workshops focus on:

  • Maintaining communication with and between students outside the classroom,
  • Building and maintaining community, and
  • Planning for rigorous assessment of academic work within these methodologies.

Workshop 1: Building and Maintaining an Electronic Classroom Community

  • 211 David Lawrence Hall, Tuesday, February 17, 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.

Presenters: Mary Kay Biagini, Information Sciences and Barbary Frey, CIDDE
Moderator: Christopher Boettcher, English

This workshop is intended to provide an introduction to the University of Pittsburgh Blackboard system and its applications. Presenters will provide examples of innovative uses of the Blackboard system for maintaining academic instruction and collaborative learning beyond the classroom setting. This workshop is intended as both an introduction to the Blackboard resources as well as a forum to share innovative applications between workshop participants.

Workshop 2: Assessing Academic Work Outside the Classroom

Presenters: Teresa Donegan, Chair, Curricular Assessment Team, Pharmacy, Sharon Connor, Course Coordinator for Experiential Learning, Pharmacy and Barbara Frey, CIDDE
Moderator: Christopher Boettcher, English

This workshop is intended to provide a forum for discussing the challenges of maintaining rigorous academic work outside the classroom and assessing student performance. Presenters will share methods used to assess work in experiential and service-learning scenarios. Workshop participants are encouraged to come ready to share assessment models they have found particularly effective.
