Summer Instructional Development Institute for Faculty

The annual Summer Instructional Development Institute (SIDI) provides University of Pittsburgh faculty with learning opportunities designed to promote effective teaching. Presented in collaboration with the Office of the Provost and the Provost’s Advisory Council on Instructional Excellence, the following initiatives are planned for 2008.

Summer Institute: Part I Mentoring Student Research
Thursday, May 8, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Often, the best way to learn about an academic subject or discipline is by participating in it. That’s why many University of Pittsburgh faculty members welcome students to participate in research. Mentoring undergraduates and graduate students in research can be a powerful teaching tool. Whether this mentoring takes place in the office or the lab, it provides exceptional opportunities for student learning.

Join your colleagues to share and discuss strategies for effectively mentoring students in research.  Discuss with a panel of student researchers their perspectives of the mentor’s role.  Work with University of Pittsburgh faculty who have successfully guided students in the research process to gain from their experience in finding answers to the following questions:

  • What are the most effective procedures for teaching students in the process of research?
  • What are your expectations for being a research mentor?
  • What are your students’ expectations?
  • Vice Provost Patricia Beeson will provide the welcome and introduction to the following faculty presenters:
  • Kathleen Blee, Sociology
  • Joseph Grabowski, Chemistry
  • Janelle Greenberg, History
  • William Keller, GSPIA

Enrollment is limited to 70. May 2 is the last day to enroll.

Summer Institute: Part II Course Design
May 1 through August 15

This opportunity provides individual course development support for those who wish to develop or revise a course. A CIDDE instructional designer will work directly with you, according to your summer schedule, to help you meet your course design goals. CIDDE can help you locate course-specific teaching materials and assist you in developing the most effective teaching activities, tests, projects, and assignments.

Enrollment is limited to 20.  July 11 is the last day to enroll.

Summer Institute: Part III Course Development Using Blackboard
Monday through Thursday, June 16 – 19, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

This Summer Institute provides hands-on instruction in Blackboard (Bb), Pitt’s Web-based course management system that facilitates the development of course Web pages. This seminar helps you to learn and apply instructional design principles and knowledge of Bb authoring, communication, and management tools.  You will analyze your existing course, methods, materials, strategies, and evaluation tools, and redesign them to incorporate Web-based course support tools, centered on Bb. You should expect to have a significant portion of your online course components completed by the end of this 4 day seminar.

Enrollment is limited to 14.  June 13 is the last day to enroll.

To enroll: Register online at www.pitt.edu/~ciddeweb/events, or for more information, contact Michelle Lane, Faculty Development Coordinator at mlane@pitt.edu or 412-383-9729.
