Applications for the 2008 Faculty Diversity Seminar will be requested in January. If you are a full time faculty member interested in expanding your own knowledge and revising a course to accommodate a diverse student audience, you are encouraged to apply for this year’s seminar, which will be held from May 5 through May 16, 2008.
Approximately 10 Seminar fellows meet as a group to discuss diversity-related issues, with guidance from two experienced Seminar leaders. Participants are expected to attend the entire seminar, without exception, during this two-week period and will be provided with a stipend upon completion of the seminar and its requirements. We especially encourage faculty who teach undergraduates to apply for this seminar.
The Faculty Diversity Seminar is designed to provide an opportunity for faculty to expand their knowledge of diversity and to review and revise courses to reflect an appreciation of diversity within the content, the classroom, and the student audience. The emphasis for this seminar at the University of Pittsburgh is on issues of race and gender as they intersect with class, sexuality, religion and ability, with primary emphasis on undergraduate courses. Seminar goals include enabling faculty to:
- Increase their awareness of diversity issues focusing on the importance of race and gender inclusion within the University curriculum.
- Identify ways that diversity issues may be addressed through inclusive teaching and learning activities that recognize and value difference.
- Transform one course to incorporate or build upon content and pedagogy that value diversity.
