Building a Bridge Between Experience and Academics

“I am teaching the course with confidence that the students will actually learn from my experiences and the materials that I have developed.”

By Sala Udin, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs

Last fall I was asked to teach a spring semester course in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) based upon my years of experience in public policy as an elected official. However, the gap between my experience and developing a graduate level syllabus was as wide as the Grand Canyon.

A CIDDE instructional designer helped me to build a bridge to the other side. With her help, I have converted my hopes for student learning into measurable learning objectives. Rather than lecturing for 15 weeks, each class has a lesson plan that will use the reading assignments to guide students through a process of self/collective learning, reflection and insight. The required readings for the course are arranged in a graduated sequence, and the Blackboard technology will make it much more easy to distribute copies of the reading materials and communicate with the class.

As a result of this process, I now have a solid basis for composing the testing instruments and the knowledge of how to develop relevant tests. Thanks to CIDDE’s instructional design and instructional technology staff, I am teaching the course with confidence that the students will actually learn from my experiences and the materials that I have developed.
