Faculty Book Discussions

The Art of Changing the Brain Enriching the Practice of Teaching by Exploring the Biology of Learning

The author, James E. Zull, is a professor of biology and director of the University Center for Innovation in Teaching and Education at Case Western Reserve University. Based on the belief that teaching is the art of changing the brain, the author argues that educators can use knowledge about the brain to enhance student learning.

Faculty facilitators will lead small discussion groups in Room 815, Alumni Hall, on the following dates/times:

  • Tuesday, October 24, 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. — Gary Stoehr, Pharmacy
    OR
  • Wednesday, October 25, noon to 1:30 p.m. — Laurel Roberts, Biological Sciences
    OR
  • Thursday, November 2, 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. — Mark Collins, Geology & Planetary Sciences  

Copies of the book are provided to all faculty who participate in the discussion.

Instructional Technology Brown Bag

All Pitt faculty are invited to an instructional technology brown bag lunch held every Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. in the Faculty Instructional Development Lab (FIDL) , room B-26 of Alumni Hall. The brown bag discussion centers on the ITmCast (multimedia Web cast) for the week. Past mCast topics addressed podcasting, Wikipedia, Janus, Mediasite, and many other new and emerging instructional technologies.

The agenda includes a preliminary discussion during lunch, a group viewing of the (real-time) mCast presentation, and a follow-up discussion with the ITmCast presenter. CIDDE will provide beverages and dessert.
