Interdisciplinary Course on Health Record Technology

Medical errors have been cited as the leading cause of death in the United States, and some health care professionals as well as many experts in related fields outside the health care industry believe that our antiquated method of paper record keeping contributes to this shocking statistic,” explains Valerie Watzlaf, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Department of Health Information Management. “Presently, no allied health schools in the country offer an online interdisciplinary course on Electronic Health Record (EHR) Technology, and current EHR products don’t meet existing standards.”

Watzlaf intends to address these shortcomings by developing an online course available to all allied health students at the University and by working with vendors who are eager to have students evaluate their EHR technology and provide feedback for improvement. Designed using patient case studies, the project, An Online Interdisciplinary Course on Electronic Health Record Technology, will provide students the opportunity to explore real EHR systems. To ensure the interdisciplinary relevance of the content, faculty from diverse health fields will review each module. Watzlaf continues, “Last year, President Bush set a goal for all Americans to have electronic health records in the next 10 years. We can help achieve this goal by preparing practitioners in the development, administration and evaluation of EHR systems.” Accordingly, Watzlaf plans to pilot the initial offering of this course next spring.
