Fall Term 2005 Faculty Workshops

The Center for Instructional Development & Distance Education (CIDDE) provides workshops throughout the year on teaching and learning topics designed to promote effective teaching and use of instructional technology. The workshops and dates for the fall term sessions are described below.

Developing a Course – 815 Alumni Hall
Thursday, September 22, Noon – 1:30 p.m. OR Wednesday, October 5, 12 Noon – 1:30 p.m.
Presenter: Dr. Joanne M. Nicoll, CIDDE Associate Director for Instructional Design and Faculty Development

Learn to use an effective, straightforward model to design a university-level course. Learning goals/objectives, activities, and assessment are the components of this learner-centered model that hundreds of Pitt faculty have found valuable. Follow-up, individual assistance is available from an instructional designer with a background in learning theory and instructional theory.

 

Making Learning Active for You and Your Students – 815 Alumni Hall
Tuesday, October 4, Noon – 1:30 p.m.
Presenter: Dr. Carol DeArment, Instructional Designer, CIDDE

This session introduces key aspects of active learning and reviews the latest research findings, with a focus on examples of specific active learning strategies that you can incorporate into small and large classes.

 

Designing a Learning Centered Syllabus – 815 Alumni Hall
Tuesday, November 1, Noon – 1:30 p.m.
Presenter: Dr. Carol Washburn, Senior Instructional Designer, CIDDE

Join your colleagues for this workshop to discuss the components of a well-designed syllabus and evaluate sample syllabi. This session will focus on how to plan and construct a syllabus that reflects the tools and information instructors can provide to help students. Please bring a copy of your syllabus to the workshop if you have one.

 

Developing Teaching Portfolios – 815 Alumni Hall
Friday, November 11, Noon – 1:30 p.m.
Presenter: Dr. Carol Washburn, Senior Instructional Designer, CIDDE

Teaching portfolios are becoming increasingly popular as one means of gaining a comprehensive view of an instructor’s teaching abilities. They can be used in tenure and promotion since they provide evidence that extends beyond traditional student evaluations. In this workshop, we will discuss developing a teaching philosophy, general components and organization of a teaching portfolio, and materials that can help document teaching effectiveness.

 

Planning and Teaching Your Classes

With expertise in how people learn and instructional theory, an instructional designer can work with you individually to assist in developing or revising a course and also to help you address questions and issues that arise about teaching. Some topics you might want to discuss include:

  • Active Learning
  • Developing a Teaching Portfolio
  • Classroom Teaching Observation and Feedback
  • How to Lead a Discussion
  • Using Instructional Technology
  • Teaching Large Lecture Classes
  • Using Problem-Based Learning
  • Small Groups and Student Teams
  • Including Writing Activities in Courses
