Electronic library reserves attract more usersThis semester, for the first time, Hillman Library is providing more electronic reserves (e-reserves) than traditional reserves of materials, according to Amy Knapp, assistant librarian for public services and departmental libraries. The system has completed a one-year pilot phase and is now available to any faculty member. E-reserves provide online or electronic access to journal articles, and in some cases book chapters, that traditionally would have been held on print reserve in the library. An obvious advantage is that, unlike traditional print reserves which were limited to one user at a time, electronic reserves enable students to use materials any time as long as they have access to a computer and are enrolled in the class. The materials can easily be made available from PittCAT or any Web site. More than 75 courses have an e-reserve component this semester. Although hard copies of materials can still be reserved at the library site, the convenience of e-reserves is attracting more users, according to Knapp. Faculty requests for e-reserves can be made from the library’s Web site. “As with traditional reserves, anyone who has questions or is at all nervous about getting started can call or stop by Hillman’s circulation desk,” Knapp said. More information is available online at www.library.pitt.edu/services/reserves/#placing-e. The following screen will appear.
Another technological convenience for faculty is document delivery service that can be requested from the library’s Web page. Journal articles that are available online can be “delivered” to a computer desktop. Other materials are delivered in print form to a campus address.
