Message to Teaching Assistants:

‘We are here to help’

by Vanessa Sterling, TA Services

Like every other new TA and TF here at the University of Pittsburgh, you must attend New Teaching Assistant Orientation the first year you teach, but how will you learn more about teaching? Where can you learn about using media in the classroom, building a teaching portfolio, or designing a syllabus? There is an easy and accessible answer—TA Services, part of the Center for Instructional Development & Distance Education (CIDDE).

In addition to organizing orientation sessions for new graduate student teachers in fall and spring terms, our office is open year-round for personalized consultations. Staffed by experienced TFs Vanessa Sterling and Melissa Swauger, we have extensive materials on hand to help you get more out of your teaching experience.

Each month, TA Services publishes an online newsletter, TATALK (pronounced TA-Talk) which analyzes a specific teaching-related issue and highlights upcoming workshops and events. Our workshops vary from the technically-focused (e.g., Using PowerPoint) to the classroom skills-based (e.g., Writing in the Undergraduate Classroom). This fall we will continue working with the campus-wide Communicating across the Curriculum initiative, and we will host workshops related to conducting recitation sections in debate format. To sign up for TATALK, fill out the form. It is free to all registered graduate students at the University of Pittsburgh.

Additionally, we are available for online consultations at TAHELP@cidde.pitt.edu. So, if you have a question about using copyrighted material in class, encouraging your cooperating professor to use CourseWeb, structuring in-class evaluations that will yield information helpful to you on the job market, or any other teaching-related issues, please feel free to write us, stop by our office (618 Alumni Hall), or call us (624-6671).

Our goal is to make you feel more comfortable, confident and competent working with your students, and we look forward to continuing this crucial service in the upcoming year.
