CIDDE
Staff Share Expertise
Maintaining a high level of
expertise in what we do is a priority in CIDDE, as is collaboration
with colleagues at other universities,” comments Diane J. Davis, director.
In addition to their work to enhance teaching and learning at Pitt,
CIDDE staff present at national conferences and write articles for various
professional publications. Here is a sampling of those activities:
- Davis, has published chapters in two major distance education texts.
Her most recent article, “Developing Text for Online Instruction,”
was published in the Handbook of Distance Education (2003), edited
by Moore and Anderson from the American Center for the Study of Distance
Education.
- Robin Wingard, instructional designer, had a featured article in
the January 2004 Educause Quarterly that reported the results
of a study involving faculty from seven universities. The study examined
changes in classroom activities following the addition of Web-based
materials in traditional university courses. Wingard subsequently
presented two online seminars about this research and has been invited
to serve as the inaugural speaker for Blackboard, Inc.’s Chairman’s
Speaker Series.
- Barbara Frey, instructional designer, is frequently called upon
to share her expertise in formative and summative program evaluation,
and most recently her experience with the use of online focus groups
for formative evaluation. Frey’s recent article on this topic, co-authored
by a faculty member from LIS and others, was published in the Spring
2004 issue of the Journal of Education for Library and Information
Science.
- Carol DeArment, instructional designer, presented her work on developing
online discussion at several national conferences this year, including
those of the American Association of Higher Education (with Rosemarie
Lyons, instructional designer, as co-presenter) and the National Learning
Infrastructure Initiative. DeArment also was invited to the University
of Delaware in June to give a faculty workshop on this topic.
- Joanne Nicoll, associate director, has delivered presentations on
faculty development at various national conferences. Her most recent
session, “Active Learning as a University-wide Vision,” was presented
to members of the international Professional & Organizational
Development Conference last October.
- Nick Laudato, associate director, makes frequent presentations on
topics related to new and emerging instructional technologies. This
year, in addition to having sessions at various professional conferences,
Laudato was invited to present on this topic for faculty at the summer
institute at Tufts University.
