This
year’s Summer Instructional Development Institute provided
faculty with instructional development opportunities on a
variety of topics. The Institute is offered each summer in
collaboration with the Office of the Provost and the Provost’s
Advisory Council on Instructional Excellence.

Course Development
Using Blackboard 5—Mary
Kay Biagini, associate dean of the School of Information
Sciences, assisted by Dan Wilson, of CIDDE’s Faculty
Instructional Development Lab, views her Web course on an
interactive electronic whiteboard. Biagini took part in summer
institute training to facilitate the development of an on-line
course that she is creating for the new FastTrack MLIS (Master
of Library and Information Science degree) Program.

Teaching and Learning
Workshop—Dr.
Ximena Zuniga of the Social Justice Education Program,
University of Massachusetts at Amherst, shares resources during
a workshop on Teaching and Learning in the Diverse Classroom.
Through interactive methods, Dr. Zuniga led participants to
examine key dynamics in the teaching and learning process and to
develop intervention strategies addressing multicultural issues
in the diverse classroom.
Course
Development and Redesign—Rosemarie
Lyons, an instructional designer at CIDDE, consults with Jorg
Wiezorek, Material Science & Engineering, on redesign of a
course during the Summer Institute. Seventeen faculty members
from six schools devoted part of the summer to enhancing their
courses by working with a CIDDE instructional designer to
develop or revise a course for the upcoming academic year.
Instructional design assistance is available throughout the year
for faculty who wish to develop or redesign courses, focusing on
such areas as enhancing active learning, integrating
instructional technologies, or modifying problem areas of
courses.
