TA Services Update
Workshops that Work
By Andrew Haley and Shannon Bliss, TA Services

One of the primary goals of TA Services at the Center for Instructional Development & Distance Education (CIDDE) is to provide teaching assistants with opportunities to acquire new skills and perfect teaching fundamentals.  To better reach this goal, TA Services is taking a new approach to workshops.

First, we are moving some of our workshops online with an innovative online newsletter, TATALK (as in “TA talk”).  Every other week, a brief essay on teaching skills with additional resource links is broadcasted to nearly 150 subscribed graduate students on campus.

Second, we are encouraging departments to schedule workshops tailored to their TAs.  Faculty, staff or graduate students can request a departmental workshop from TA Services.  Topic suggestions include plagiarism, coping with difficult situations, the web as a teaching tool, teaching portfolios or a topic more specific to your department’s needs.

For more information on department-based workshops or to sign up for our online newsletter (for graduate students only), contact TA Services at CIDDE, 624-6671 or TAHELP@cidde.pitt.edu.
