| 1. | My
department wants to teach a course via distance learning. Where do I start
to find out about this? The first place to start is with a call to Dr. Joanne Nicoll at 624-7372, or email her at nicoll@pitt.edu. She will help to get you on the right track concerning different technologies available and teaching methods that work best in distance education. |
| 2. | What do your services
cost? Generally speaking, there are no fees involved for our services for work related to instruction at the University. There are situations where the scope of the work desired is more involved and lengthy, or when it must be completed within a restricted time. In these cases some discussion is necessary regarding compensation. Contact us first to discuss the particulars. |
| 3. | What is instructional
design? This is a method of analyzing the learning needs of your students, creating the design of the lessons, developing the teaching methods and materials, helping you to implement the instruction and, finally, evaluating its effectiveness. Also, we can use the resources of CIDDE to assist you in the creation of graphics, computer programming and photography. |
| 4. | I've been teaching this
class for many years. Why should I consider using an instructional
designer at this point? You are the expert in your field of study. That gives you a keen insight into the nuances and complexities of your subject. Like you, instructional designers are experts too. We have studied learning theory (how people learn) and instructional theory (how we can help people to learn). Using up-to-date research in the field of instruction, we will assist you in implementing the most effective teaching activities, whether it's face-to-face classroom instruction or online teaching, creating assessments, or even designing a computer screen in an instructional multimedia program. We will be the behind-the-scenes support you need to feel more satisfied with your teaching efforts and to help your students learn as easily and effectively as possible. More effective teaching also increases your students' satisfaction measured by evaluations of your course! |
| 5. | Do you assist in creating
new courses only? No. We will review any course that you have in place to provide you with an evaluation of its effectiveness. Then, a plan of action can be established to reconstruct less effective areas of instruction. We can, of course, help you create new courses too. |
