Classroom TCP/IP Configuration for Media Services PC's
These are instructions for the configuration of a computer connected to the Internet in a classroom. There are many varieties of TCP/IP software available. This document covers the most commonly used on campus. These are: |

| Windows NT Setup |
1) Click on the Start Menu.
2) Choose Settings.
3) Choose Control Panel.
4) Double click on Network.
5) Click on TCP/IP Protocol.
6) Click on Properties. |

| 7) The IP Address configuration dialog should appear. If not, click on the IP Address tab to open it. |
| 8) Enter: |
IP Address: |
136.142.XXX.*** (obtain XXX and *** for your specific classroom network port). |
| |
Subnet Mask: |
255.255.0.0 or
255.255.255.0 (if one Subnet Mask doesn't work, try the other one). |

Default Gateway: |
136.142.XXX.1 (be certain that XXX matches in IP number) |

| 9) Click on the DNS tab. Make sure information is correct as following: |

Host Name: |
(Any name) |
| |
DNS Service Search Order: |
136.142.57.10
136.142.188.73
136.142.188.76 |
| |
Domain Suffix Search Order: |
cidde.pitt.edu
cis.pitt.edu
pitt.edu |
| |

10) Click on OK to set the TCP/IP Properties.
11) Click on OK again to exit the Network control panel.
12) The PC will reboot and be configured with the new TCP/IP configuration. |

| Windows 2000 Setup |
1) Click on the Start Menu.
2) Choose Settings.
3) Double click on Network and Dial-up Connections.

| 4) Double click on Local Area Connection. |
| |
 |
5) Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
6) Click on Properties. |

| 7) Enter: |
IP Address: |
136.142.XXX.*** (obtain XXX and *** for your specific classroom network port). |

Subnet Mask: |
255.255.0.0 or
255.255.255.0 (if one Subnet Mask doesn't work, try the other one). |

136.142.XXX.1 (be certain that XXX matches in IP number) |

8) Click on Advanced TCP/IP Settings.
9) Click on the DNS tab. Make sure information is correct as following: |

10) Click on OK to set the TCP/IP Properties.
11) Click on Close again to exit the Local Area Connection Status Window. |

| Macintosh Setup with Open Transport |
| Open the TCP/IP control panel which can be found in the “Control Panels” folder under the Apple on the menu bar. The TCP/IP control panel should look similar to this: |

Enter information into this TCP/IP configuration screen in the following order :
1) At the top of the screen where it says “Connect via” select Ethernet from the pulldown menu.
2) For the “Configure” pulldown, select Manually.
3) For the “IP Address” enter 136.142.XXX.*** (obtain XXX and *** for your specific classroom network port).
4) For the “Subnet mask” enter 255.255.255.0 or 255.555.0.0.
5) Enter the “Router address” 136.142.XXX.1 (be certain that XXX matches in IP number).
6) Make sure that the addresses in the “Name server addr” appear as they do in the above illustration.
7) Under “Search domains” enter cidde.pitt.edu, cis.pitt.edu or pitt.edu.
Close the TCP/IP window and click “Save” when asked if you would like to save the configuration. There is no need to restart your Macintosh. You should now be able to use any application which accesses the Internet. |
