Courses
and Workshops
TA/TF Services at the Center for Instructional Development & Distance
Education (CIDDE) offers a variety of courses and workshops to
prepare graduate student instructors at the University of Pittsburgh
to meet their teaching goals and responsibilities from the first
day of class through the job search process.
New TA Orientation
At the start of the fall and spring
terms, CIDDE holds an orientation for new Teaching Assistants from
across campus. The orientation consists of workshops led by experienced
teaching assistants and is designed to prepare new teaching assistants
and fellows to teach at the University of Pittsburgh. The workshops
are designed to provide new graduate student instructors with the
practical skills they will need and to familiarize them with University
policies and resources. All new teaching assistants are required
to take part in the orientation unless their department has been
exempted by the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences.
For the dates of this year's upcoming NTAO see News and Events.
Workshops For Teaching
Assistants And Teaching Fellows
CIDDE offers a "hands-on" workshop
series for graduate student instructors during the academic year.
Led by experienced instructors from across the University campus,
these workshops provide practical advice and ideas for graduate
students teaching recitations, labs or their own classes as well
as the opportunity to share experiences with other teaching assistants
and teaching fellows. In the past, TA/TF Services has offered workshops
on using visual aids, dealing with difficult students, creating
writing assignments, working with small groups and lesson planning.

University Teaching Practicum
FACDEV 2200 is a graduate seminar
designed for teaching assistants and teaching fellows who will
be teaching a class independently for the first time. A mainstay
of the University's commitment to both graduate and undergraduate
education, the Practicum is a practical introduction to
teaching. Topics include the following:
- The Student-Instructor Relationship
- Designing a Course
- Assessing Students and the Course
- Presentation Skills and Instructional Methods
- Reflecting on Your Teaching
The Practicum encourages
new instructors to share concerns and experiences through class
and electronic discussions, and assignments encourage graduate
student instructors to create and improve classroom materials including
syllabi, student assignments, and lesson plans.
FACDEV 2200 is recommended for all
graduate students instructors teaching for the first time and is required for
all FAS graduate student instructors teaching their own classes.

COURSEWEB
CourseWeb/Blackboard is course
management software that uses an easy-to-use Web site for course
information and documents. CourseWeb/Blackboard provides
online tools for class discussions, practice quizzes, handing in
homework, and linking to educational sites. CIDDE provides training
for graduate student instructors teaching their own courses who
are interested in using this software.
