SIDI 1

  Mentoring Student Research
  Thursday, May 8, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

- Register Online

Often, the best way to learn about an academic subject or discipline is by participating in it. That's why many University of Pittsburgh faculty members welcome students to participate in research. Mentoring undergraduates and graduate students in research can be a powerful teaching tool. Whether this mentoring takes place in the office or the lab, it provides exceptional opportunities for student learning.

Join your colleagues to share and discuss strategies for effectively mentoring students in research. Discuss with a panel of student researchers their perspectives of the mentor’s role. Work with University of Pittsburgh faculty who have successfully guided students in the research process to gain from their experience in finding answers to the following questions:

What are the most effective procedures for teaching students in the process of research?

What are your expectations for being a research mentor?

What are your students’ expectations?

Vice Provost Patricia Beeson will provide the welcome and introduction to the following faculty presenters:

  • Kathleen Blee, Sociology
  • Joseph Grabowski, Chemistry
  • Janelle Greenberg, History
  • William Keller, GSPIA

Enrollment is limited to 70.
May 1 is the last day to enroll.

SIDI 2

  Course Design
  May 1 through August 15

Do you want to develop a new course or revise an existing one? This opportunity provides individual course development support for those who wish to work on the development or revision of a course.

A CIDDE Instructional Designer will work directly with you, according to your summer schedule, and will coordinate other CIDDE resources that can help you to meet your design goals. CIDDE can help you to locate teaching materials for your specific course
topic; develop tests, projects, and assignments; and select the most effective teaching strategies.

This opportunity to work individually with an instructional designer allows for flexible scheduling to fit your summer calendar. You may arrange meeting times (typically 12-15 hours total) with a CIDDE instructional designer and work on your project for up to six weeks.

This Summer Institute is designed with the expectation that, at the end of the program, you will have created the basic components of a new course or revitalized an existing one, incorporating the most current and effective teaching and learning strategies.

Enrollment is limited to 20.
July 11 is the last day to enroll.

SIDI 3
  Course Development Using Blackboard
  Monday through Thursday, June 16 - 19
  9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

This Summer Institute provides hands-on instruction in using Blackboard (Bb), the Web-based system that facilitates the development of course Web pages. Over 3,000 Pitt faculty members have used Blackboard to supplement their on-campus courses and to deliver distance education.

This seminar helps you to enhance your course by applying instructional design principles and knowledge of Bb authoring, communication, and management tools. You will learn how to use the Bb Content System to organize and store your course materials and will learn how to incorporate collaborative tools (such as wikis and discussion boards), surveys, and assessments into your course. In addition, you will learn how to use related computing tools (such as PowerPoint, images, audio, and video) that can facilitate or enhance your instruction.

In this seminar, you will work with your own course, preparing materials that will be used with Bb. Because it includes a great deal of individualized hands-on work, you should expect to have a significant portion of your online course components completed by the end of the seminar.

Please note that this seminar provides an intensive, immersive training experience by combining a wide range of standard Bb and elective training sessions with significant hands-on practice and individual consulting sessions. If you are not able to dedicate four consecutive days to training, you can obtain a similar experience by subscribing to the full range of seminars regularly offered by CIDDE. There are no prerequisites for this seminar. You should be familiar with basic computer operating system concepts such as files, and should be experienced with Web browsers.

Enrollment is limited to 14.
June 9 is the last day to enroll.
