New Faculty Orientation - Schedule
Resources to Support Instruction and Research

The University of Pittsburgh's New Faculty Orientation is designed to assist you in identifying key resources for teaching and research across the University that will be helpful as you begin your career at Pitt.
The goals of New Faculty Orientation are to help you:

  • Identify support services for assistance in teaching and research
  • Meet some key resource people and recognize their functions at the University
  • Recognize the importance that the University places on the integration of teaching and research

You will have the opportunity to meet and talk with other new colleagues, as well as department chairs, deans, and key University administrators. We hope that New Faculty Orientation will provide you with insight and assistance that will help you in your career at the University of Pittsburgh.

Morning Activities

  • 9:00 am - 9:45 am
    Research Support at the University
    George E. Klinzing, Vice Provost for Research
    This session will provide information about the Office of Research and its operations, from how to submit proposals to relationships with departmental administrators. Special research seminars and funding opportunities will be noted. Intellectual property issues and the Office of Technology Management operation will be discussed. Research compliance issues will be presented including:

    • Research Integrity

    • Institutional Animal Usage

    • Institutional Review Board

    • Conflict of Interest

Morning Workshops

  • 10:00 am - Noon
    Concurrent Sessions (Mellon Hall, 5th Floor, Alumni Hall)
    To enable you to attend both morning sessions, you will be divided into groups.  The program you receive at New Faculty Orientation on August 24 will direct you to each of the concurrent sessions at the appropriate time and room location.
     
  • Center for Instructional Development & Distance Education

    The Center for Instructional Development & Distance Education (CIDDE) provides a wide range of services to faculty in support of University teaching and learning.  In this session, you will meet key CIDDE personnel, learn how to access the instructional services they provides, and see examples of educational software and materials that faculty have developed with assistance from the CIDDE staff.
     
  • University Libraries
    Rush Miller, Director, University Library System
    This session will provide an overview of the University Library System and the Health Sciences Library System.  This will include the circulation/reserve policies and information about the ever-expanding electronic and digital resources.  Faculty need to be aware of these and other library resources, and learn how to navigate optimally and effectively through them.

    Luncheon - Introduction of Deans and Chairs

Afternoon Workshops

  • 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. (J.W. Connolly Ballroom, Alumni Hall)
    Office of Measurement and Evaluation of Teaching (OMET)

    Nancy Reilly, Interim Director
    An overview of OMET services related to instruction will be given. These include (a) scoring of objective examinations, (b) administration of the student evaluation of teaching system for the University, (c) computer-based testing for undergraduate and graduate admissions and certification, and (d) research design and statistical consulting for students working on theses and dissertations.
     
  • Computing Services and Systems Development
    Brian K. Hart, Manager, CSSD Business and Resources Services
    This workshop provides an overview of computing resources available for faculty. These include the network resources, software licensing program, training opportunities, and the computing environment available to students and faculty through the campus computing labs.
     
  • Student Support Services
    Kathy Humphrey, Vice Provost and Dean of Students
    This session will provide descriptions of several University student support services and their relationship to the academic programs. Services include:
    • Career Services
    • Student Life
    • Disability Resources and Services
    • Counseling Center
    • Student Health Service
    • International Services
